Costa Rica’s Savage’s Thin-Toed Frog: A Nocturnal Giant That Seems to Run Through the Forest

During a night walk in Costa Rica’s Caribbean region, a sudden movement among the leaves may reveal one of the area’s most impressive amphibians: Savage’s thin-toed frog, scientifically known as Leptodactylus savagei.


Its large size, powerful body, and predatory behavior make it very different from the small tropical frogs many people imagine. When trying to escape, it can also perform a rapid series of short jumps that make it look as though it is running across the forest floor.


This is one of the species we may encounter during a Night Tour in Puerto Viejo, especially on humid nights or after rainfall.


One of the Largest Frogs in Costa Rica


Savage’s thin-toed frog is one of the largest frogs found in Costa Rica and one of the largest anurans in Central America.


Adult males can reach around 14.2 centimeters in body length, while females may grow to approximately 14.6 centimeters. These measurements refer to the distance from the snout to the rear end of the body and do not include the legs. When fully extended, the frog can appear even larger.


Although it is sometimes described as Costa Rica’s largest frog, it is more accurate to call it one of the country’s largest, since Costa Rica also has large toads of comparable size.


Its body is broad and muscular, with powerful hind legs. Its coloration usually combines brown, reddish, bronze, and black tones, allowing it to blend into leaf litter, mud, roots, and decaying vegetation.

Why Is It Sometimes Called the Calf Frog?


One of its local names is related to its deep and powerful call.


During the breeding season, males vocalize near wet areas or temporary pools created by rainfall. In the darkness, the sound may seem far too deep to come from a frog. Some people compare it to the call of a calf, which explains the Spanish name rana ternero, or “calf frog.”


It is primarily a nocturnal and terrestrial species. During the day, it normally remains hidden, while at night it emerges to move around, hunt, and reproduce.


Its distribution extends from Honduras and Nicaragua through Costa Rica and Panama, reaching parts of northern Colombia.


An Extremely Voracious Predator


Savage’s thin-toed frog does not feed only on small insects.


It is an opportunistic predator capable of capturing a wide variety of animals. Its diet may include insects, spiders, scorpions, and other invertebrates, but large individuals may also consume small vertebrates, including other frogs.


Its strategy is not based on pursuing one particular type of prey. Like other large frogs in the genus Leptodactylus, it may attempt to capture almost any animal it can overpower and swallow.


Frogs do not chew food in the same way humans do. Instead of breaking food apart with their teeth, they usually capture and swallow their prey whole. For this reason, the size of the mouth plays an important role in determining what they can eat.


There are reports and observations of large Leptodactylus frogs capturing unusual prey, including small birds. However, this does not mean that birds or chicks form a regular part of the diet of every population. Savage’s thin-toed frog is mainly an opportunistic hunter that takes advantage of whatever suitable prey is available.


Does This Frog Run or Jump?


When threatened, this frog can move with surprising speed.


From our own observations during night walks, it does not always escape with one long jump. Instead, it often performs a series of low, short, extremely rapid jumps.


The movement can be so continuous that, for a moment, the frog appears to be running across the leaves rather than jumping.


This escape behavior can make it difficult to follow with the eyes. It is also difficult to hold because it combines sudden movement with moist, slippery skin.


During a responsible wildlife tour, there is no need to catch the frog in order to observe it. The best approach is to maintain a respectful distance, avoid blocking its escape route, and allow it to continue its natural behavior.


Amphibians have delicate, permeable skin. Touching them may affect the protective layer covering their bodies and expose them to substances present on human hands. Savage’s thin-toed frog may also produce defensive skin secretions that can irritate the eyes and other sensitive areas.

A Nest Made of Foam


The reproductive cycle of Savage’s thin-toed frog is just as fascinating as the adult animal.


During breeding, the male calls near temporary pools or depressions filled by rainwater. When a female approaches, the pair produces a mass of foam that functions as a nest.


The eggs remain protected inside this foam, where they retain moisture and receive some protection from external conditions.


After hatching, the tadpoles emerge and continue developing. They later undergo metamorphosis, growing legs, changing their respiratory system, gradually absorbing the tail, and acquiring the body shape of a young frog.


For amphibians, it is more accurate to use the term metamorphosis rather than “complete metamorphosis,” which is commonly used for insects that pass through egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.


The predatory behavior of this species may begin during the larval stage. Tadpoles have been observed feeding on organic matter and may also consume other tadpoles or animal material available in temporary pools.

Do Frogs Use Their Eyes to Swallow?


One of the strangest aspects of frog feeding occurs after the prey has been captured.


Because frogs do not chew like mammals, they use coordinated movements of the tongue, mouth, throat, skull, and facial muscles to push food toward the esophagus.


In many frogs, the eyes close and retract slightly into the head during swallowing. This movement helps push the prey downward toward the throat.


Research on other frog species has shown that frogs can still swallow when eye movement is restricted, but they may require more attempts. This suggests that the eyes are not the only mechanism involved, but they provide useful additional pressure.


Although this process has not been studied in the same detail specifically in Leptodactylus savagei, it helps explain why frogs often appear to close or sink their eyes while swallowing large prey.


Its Role in the Ecosystem

By consuming insects, arachnids, and small vertebrates, it helps influence the populations of many other animals. At the same time, the frog may become prey for snakes, mammals, and other forest predators.


It is therefore not simply a frog that eats insects. It forms part of a complex food web connecting small invertebrates with larger animals.


Its life cycle also connects terrestrial and aquatic environments. Adults spend much of their lives on land, but they depend on temporary pools and humid areas for reproduction.


Is It an Indicator of Forest Health?


Amphibians are especially sensitive to environmental change.


Their permeable skin absorbs water and may also absorb pollutants. Many amphibian species also depend on specific moisture levels and require both terrestrial and aquatic habitats during different stages of their life cycle.


For these reasons, changes in amphibian diversity or abundance can provide useful information about habitat quality.


However, the presence of a single Savage’s thin-toed frog should not be treated as definitive proof that an ecosystem is completely healthy. Ecological assessments are more reliable when researchers consider the entire amphibian community, water quality, vegetation, rainfall, and other environmental factors.


The species is currently considered to be of Least Concern at the global level. Nevertheless, protecting forests, wetlands, and temporary breeding pools remains essential for its long-term survival.


A Special Encounter During a Night Tour


Savage’s thin-toed frog perfectly represents what makes a night walk in Costa Rica’s Caribbean region so special.


During the day, it may remain completely hidden beneath roots, logs, leaves, or soil. After sunset, the forest changes. New sounds appear, nocturnal animals begin moving, and species like this frog emerge to hunt or reproduce.


Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. That uncertainty is part of the experience. Every night is different, and each encounter depends on rainfall, temperature, humidity, and the natural activity of the animals.

The next time something appears to run through the leaves, it may not be a small mammal. It could be one of Costa Rica’s largest and most voracious frogs escaping through a rapid succession of short jumps.
