Explore one of the true natural gems of Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean on an unforgettable hiking experience through the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, part of the La Amistad Caribbean Conservation Area. This unique protected area combines natural conservation with the presence and traditions of local communities, creating a remarkable example of coexistence between people and nature. The experience consists of a guided hike of approximately 10 km round trip, with 5 km each way, through the Manzanillo sector of the refuge. The trail follows a historic route that has been used for generations by local residents to access their farms and properties within the refuge. Today, this same path offers an authentic way to discover the area’s history, biodiversity, and spectacular Caribbean landscapes. As you walk through the lush tropical rainforest, every step can reveal something new. The trail combines sections of dense forest with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea, while secluded beaches appear between the vegetation like hidden tropical paradises. Along the way, you will walk beneath impressive trees such as fig trees, ceiba trees, and sandbox trees, while your bilingual naturalist guide shares information about the rainforest ecosystem, local flora and fauna, and the cultural history of Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean. The refuge is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Depending on the conditions and the activity of the animals, you may encounter white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, basilisk lizards, toucans, woodpeckers, and black hawks. With a little luck, you may also spot more elusive species such as tayras or the iconic eyelash viper. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals move freely through their natural habitat, making every hike a different experience guided by what nature chooses to reveal.
